Talking AI with Vikas Gupta, Computer Scientist and Silicon Valley based startup founder
If you are listening to this on the Sell app, you can add your own question by using the Ask button in the app and ask your own question that you might have. And if you're listening to it on the web, you can download the app to join the conversation. That's it Ricas. Welcome back to swell. So I am going to start off with a bunch of questions here. You'll find the format slightly new since the last time you were on Swell
Hi, Vikas. To start off so that our listeners get to know you a bit better, if you can talk a bit about your own background as it relates relates to computer science. And Ali, what has led to your interest in the industry and the technology and what has been your experience with it?
Vikas Gupta
@vikasgupta · 3:03
And I think AI what we're seeing now is a whole another wave of technology that's that's landed in our laps. And I definitely think it's it has the promise of creating disruption in so many ways and also bringing kind of the next wave of benefits to humanity that we've seen that tech has brought us over the last several years as well. And I'm particularly interested in AI because the promise of how much more productive it can make us if leveraged the right way
You. Thank you in advance for answering the first question. Now, let's talk a bit about Ali hype. AI research has been going on for many decades. But since the Chat GPT announcement has certainly become almost like a cultural phenomenon, people are using it. People are saying that it will be bigger than the steam engine or the internet. How do you explain the current hype? Do you think it is justified? Is it just hype? Or are you barely scratching the surface here?

And I think it is also going to make some of the folks possibly who were starting to age out in the tech world who maybe people like, people not very different from me, who having been in tech, having coded for many, many years. Feel a sense of laziness, if you will, in doing a lot of the grunt work that goes into building any software and being able to delegate that to a piece of AI that I can access at a very low cost at $20 a month
My next question for you is about super AI, extremely intelligent AI that will be way smarter than us and will it result in the end of humanity? That's kind of what a lot of people are talking about, that it is an existential threat. What is your perspective on that? And what do you think about ali these calls for regulation of the I industry?
Vikas Gupta
@vikasgupta · 4:32
And as they become accessible and those mini goals that we seem fairly benign as a part of the AI we create that eventually leads to a sort of a goal or a purpose that AI can start to set for itself, that can potentially be a threat to humanity. I definitely believe that. I think while this is a phenomenal tool for us to leverage for benefiting ourselves, we need to be watchful of where this is going
You. My fourth question with us is about the impact this is going to have on jobs and careers. So what would be your advice to students and job seekers? What do you think is the impact of AI on the job market? And should the students and people who are midcareer be looking on acquiring specific knowledge and skills to be better prepared paired for that world?
Vikas Gupta
@vikasgupta · 3:44
So one aspect that we are seeing play out in real time is that there are some jobs that AI will replace, jobs that we can even imagine being done by some software, will naturally be done by by these tools and will cost a lot less to whoever needed to get these jobs done. So I think the question is, you know, if I was entering a job market today or if I was studying in college, where should I be focusing on what should I be doing?
Hello. What has surprised you about AI? There has been lot of development, but AI has innovation has been going on for many, many years. Right. So what is it about the current wave of AI innovation? Is there something in particular that has kind of caught you almost by surprise? Something you did not expect to happen, that has happened about this wave of innovation in the AI industry?
Vikas Gupta
@vikasgupta · 2:23
So what that leads to is, I would say, unknown, but I can connect the dots and see where this goes. So that's probably the most surprising thing, is to see the kind of artwork that AI is able to create for us

The other tool I would recommend on the kind of generative AI space, and I've talked about it a little bit earlier as well, is Mid Journey and how good the output is. And my plan in this summer is to actually use that tool with my kids to create art as a part of a so

But if there is something that comes to mind, a conversation, or maybe there's a link of an article that you have read that you would want people to read and discuss, or there's a question you feel that should be asked in this area, I would love for you to start a new cell on that topic

Hey, Vikas. I'm going to pop a quick question in here. It's great to hear your voice again or the anticipation of your voice. I got to interview you here a couple of years ago now, and this question has to do with loneliness. The Surgeon general talked about loneliness being an epidemic in this country. I'm going to link that article here for you. What do you think AI can do in a positive way to keep people from feeling lonely?
Vikas Gupta
@vikasgupta · 2:58
But the promise of the AI I would say is definitely these, that it can create more time for us to invest in the people around us and to build those social connections which will hopefully make us less lonelier. And I hope we do that

AI can be misused, and the possibility of it becoming a threat and a problem is real in the minds of many people. I don't know. Check out the swell and let me know what you think
Because when you go into the villages, when you go into the weaker section of the society, they don't have anything to do with AI, they don't have anything to do with the charge GPD. They don't know what is that. So how will this affect these people, this sector in coming future?
