He was colorblind, and that made him ineligible as a pilot and also ineligible for the draft. He went on to cover the space race, which may have given him some consolation for being grounded. One of the people he interviewed in 1962 more than made good on his own early civilian pilot training. Astronaut John Glenn, learned to fly through that program. However, there was an earlier aviation connection that really boosted Cronkite's career
