Retro: The Real World

article image placeholderUploaded by @GlennPriceMann
A lot of people had never watched anything like this before. And all the different dynamics that come with having different people from different backgrounds, different races, sexual orientations. Now, of course, when we think of reality tv today, we think of all the salaciousness and drama and fighting. And while the real world did have some of its dramatic moments, this was really sort of an understated era in the very beginning of reality tv

How MTV’s reality show changed everything.

And the thing that I thought really kind of distinguished the real world from a lot of other television is that you had confessionals and so you had sidebars. And this is what reality tv still does today. But it can be edited together to where you can have the person speaking about the moment and then actually see the moment and all kind of edited in a way that allows you to get inside their head in what they're doing and what they're saying and how they're acting in a particular moment

Just take someone off the street, really put them on tv for a few months, and, like, all of a sudden, they're, like, a celebrity. It was kind of unheard of, really. I remember Eric Niles, who was one of the original seven, went on to become a very popular host on MTV. They like fitness videos and infomercials. But it was kind of like, okay, this is sort of a new terrain

@GlennPriceMann The Presidency

And then I think about, you know, there's not really a reality tv show around politics, however. You know, sometimes the house and the hearings that we have kind of, you know, you're looking for those sound bites, and people are just kind of almost treating that as a reality show, if you will, rather than actually getting to the answers in these, some of these committees

Oh, hey. So I just want to say that was a really astute analysis, and you're 100% correct about the sort of the culture of reality tv directly leading to the Trump presidency in this era of politics, which is pretty much just like reality tv with outrageous characters and actions. And your description of the House of Representatives is absolutely perfect
