The Cleveland Indians will remove their nickname after 100 years

article image placeholderCleveland's plans to drop 'Indians' from team name is a welcome change but it's long overdue, Native Americans say
And only on certain occasions. A Thursday night game against the New York Jets is just not that equivalent. So I know it even goes deeper than that. But I just wanted to bring that up that as we look to these nicknames getting eliminated, I still find it hard to believe that we have to explain these two different mindsets here as to why they're being eliminated. And while I'm a traditionist at heart, there are some things that we should put to rest

There is still controversy over why the removal https://s.swell.life/SSJHD3Mp58mQRkw

And most of the people that defend these teams and the names and the culture behind it. And like you said, the imagery and the way that the fans dress at games and behave at games, and they just say, we're having fun and we're honoring these people. Well, then you don't really understand the nuance of history. And you don't really understand how complex years and years and years of built up colonialism, what that can do to a culture

What about the agreement of Utah and the Utes?

There is a drum and a feather that is symbolic of the Utribe that they will allow to be placed on the helmet. And a lot of people think it's a circle and a feather. So there's a little bit of misunderstanding there. But one of the major things that they put this year was that the University of Utah must educate every incoming student about the Utribe and the history of the Utribe

@Phil

According to the audited financial statement obtained by USA Today Sports on Tuesday, the Washington Redskins Original Americans Foundation distributed $0 in grants for donations to Native American causes during the fiscal year ending February 20, 2019. So tax records show that they donated nearly $3.7 million in the first year, but less than half of that mountain year two. The foundation subsequently donated 650,000 in 2017, 303,000 in 2018 and zero in 2019. So to me, this just indicates that everything was done for show and tell
