I think the show just hit it on the nail of what it was like to be in high school and the troubles and turbulations you go through in high school. Now, granted, I was a 17 year old boy and it was about a 15 year old girl in high school, but somehow it just related to me. There was a connection there, and it was really good writing and the episodes just played out. And it took you out on a journey

Talking favorite high school tv series. What was yours and how did you relate it and how did it help you survive high school?

So, like, I watched Vampire Diaries and Gossip Girl, which are two shows that are very like they're based in high school, and they're very bad, but not, like, bad. Like, I didn't enjoy them. They're just not like, amazing shows. They were super entertaining to watch, though. It didn't help me learn anything about myself. They were just, like, purely entertainment, but, yeah, I don't know

The idea of her versus the reality of her are two different things and they explored in the show, meaning she could be an activist in her Neald and fully stand against something or for something but not openly say it due to feeling defeated before she even starts. So she doesn't even do anything to make a stand or make a change. She's self deprecating to a degree. She's fully aware that she's self deprecating. She self sabotages and is aware of that as well

Hello, Chai. Thanks for the feedback, Daria. Yeah. I remember Daria Fondly. Probably one of my favorite animated shows. It came out in the early 90s, I believe, on MTV. And it's probably one of my favorite shows on MTV. Because by that time I was kind of growing out of music television. It really wasn't music television anymore. And that's a whole other post, but it just got to be garbage TV shows

And some of these shows got me through high school, where in your situation, you watched them after and you felt mature beyond the characters of what was happening on TV in your time, which is cool. I always felt more mature myself, but my so called Life tackled very mature issues, and I gravitated towards that show, which is really weird because it was about a 15 year old girl, essentially. But I related somehow. And for me, it helped me get through high school

So it's actually cheap, by the way. But I had a question for you since you mentioned it. What made you prefer film over TV shows? Because I once was the same way. But I also was around a lot of personal, so we're like, we're purist. We only watch and it's like, okay, cool. Come down a bit. Also, Netflix Originals really opened a new place for me to enjoy shows that had a little bit more continuity to them

Okay. I was using shy cause I thought you might have been from Chicago, but apparently not so Chi. Thanks for replying again. Some might call me pretentious, and that's okay. But I have always preferred feature film over television. I've been watching movies since I was little little boy. Very, very long time, and it transcended into adult. And I just love feature films where there's a full story from the beginning, and then there's an ending conclusion

Joan of Arcadia, Hollywood Video, and films!

Hey, Neil, I love this conversation. It was really interesting hearing everyone's replies. And what really drew me to this is you talking about my socalled life because I love that show. I've seen it multiple times times. I think the first time I may have seen it actually was when I was in middle school and it really stuck with me. And actually this audio project I worked on takes a clip from my so called life that I just thought was hilarious

I practically lived at the video store, renting movies and watching them with my friends. So I basically lived there. And I was sad to see the video store culture go. But as far as television shows now, I don't think there's any high school show that really taps that root of what it's like to go through high school quite like my so called life. No, I don't think there is any. And I don't really watch television that much

@NealD Film stores & auteurs

And so they play a lot of old movies, and we'll do sort of themed weeks and months and things like that, which is really fun. So that may be the closest we get to it for film lovers. But there is something when all the blockbusters, all the Hollywood videos, all of the local film stores closed. It was pretty sad

Mine was Video Plus, which was this little mom and pop store that carried a fantastic section of horror films. And that's where I really fell in love with horror. And the lady that owned it was a horror buff as well. And I used to talk to her about horror films, and I really miss that time in my life. It was a really fun time, but I don't see it coming back
