Let's Talk About: Mental Health & Spirituality with Myla Clark

article image placeholderspirituality
After all this time, I hope you're doing well. As I just said, spirituality is a very personal experience. And so I find that everyone finds their own unique path with it. So I wanted to start out by asking how your spirituality manifests itself. How do you incorporate it into your life? And that being said, how did you come to realize that spiritual wellness is just as important as the physical, mental health and emotional wellness

I want to let everybody know spirituality is, however, you want to define your connection and whatever recognition of the feeling or sense of belief that brings you to your higher self. That is my own personal Disclaimer. So my personal journey through spirituality actually aim about after two years into my school and College, about almost two and a half years ago or three years ago, I had just gone through a really bad breakup, actually, my first relationship, my first everything, essentially

Why be spiritual?

Thank you for sharing that it's really inspiring. As someone who has also had my fair share of trauma and poor mental health, I know it can be difficult to find someone who can actually help, but I'm really happy that you did. I swear by therapy wholeheartedly, and I genuinely believe that anyone can benefit from it. Also, I always hear about people beginning their spiritual awakening as a result of hitting a low point in their lives. And the spiritual awakening itself is never easy

A lot of it starts in your brain, the way you mentally compartionize certain things, and then that directly impacts either your physical health. And then that has a domino effect of different things, different symptoms that make you feel either, like, less than I felt like personally. When I was really depressed, it started out with just me saying, like, oh, I don't feel good. And I didn't feel worthy in a sense

And to answer your second question is, what can be learned by becoming more spiritual is I think that what I take out of spirituality. I think out of of everything. It's the self, it's the mindfulness. It's the fact that you always have the choice. You always have the power. I think for me it's giving myself power. I will never forget the chart that my therapist gave me when I was seeing her regularly. It was a Vin diagram

How does being spiritual affect your life?

I know that you're a public health professional, and I was hoping you could share how spirituality factors into that or if it doesn't. But in general, do you think your spirituality makes you better at the things that you invest your time in, like work or art

I get sad sometimes and accepting that and then diving deeper into why feeling like that? Why are you feeling like that so long? Thank you for reiterating that

So I chose public health because one of the main responsibilities of somebody in the field of public health is improving the quality of life for not only an individual but for the whole general public. And with that, I feel like my soul. What I found is that my sole purpose was to improve the qualities of life of other people. That's where I feel my most fulfilled when I'm helping out, whether it's public service or not

Oh, you're practicing your spiritual higher self, but I will ask them every day. Oh, how are you feeling today? You're feeling sad. Why are you feeling sad? And how can we resolve this issue? Oh, you're feeling grateful. That's awesome. Why are you feeling grateful? And what are you grateful for? So just kind of affirming the fact that they are humans and that they have emotions and that their feelings are valid

Mindfulness+Emotional Intelligence in public schools?

I'm actually trying to find a way to teach in Latin America next year, but I love that you got to teach them not only literate skills, but also spiritual ones. I have this idea, and I've spoken about it in a previous well, but I have a lot of ideas about a new public education curriculum, multiple and one aspect or module of that would be mindfulness and emotional intelligence

And what I mean by design your life class is that it is a class and curriculum set up that you talk about your values, your personality type, and just about yourself. And how does that reflect on what you want to do with your life and what you are doing with your life? For example, I was introduced to this type of curriculum in my freshman year of College. Bill Johnson, home from the University of North Carolina Greensboro

Final thoughts

I love that idea. I've never heard of anything like that before, but that seems like a class that could really make a difference in a lot of people's lives. I would argue that high school would probably be the best time to take it simply because because it catches people at a time in their lives where they're supposed to start thinking about the future. Sorry
