Hello, everyone. It's Liora here. And today I will be discussing a topic that departs from my focus on the humanities. Today I will be talking to Kylie Minipelli about her experiences as a young professional in the healthcare field and what it's like working on the front lines of a global pandemic. Kylie is a very recent Pitt graduate, and while there she double majored in neuroscience and English writing

Hi Liora, thank you so much for having me. I'm really looking forward to having this conversation with you, and I'm also glad to have been introduced to Swell in general. I think it seems like there's so many opportunities for thought provoking conversations on here, and I think that's awesome. I appreciate your interest in talking with me specifically about healthcare related topics because I think everyone, including myself, is realizing how crucial these topics are now more than ever
I think it's important to acknowledge, even though it's far from revelatory that healthcare workers are people and that the things they see and do in their field affect them. And when there's a crisis, people in certain positions get burdened with a lot of responsibility which can impact their wellbeing, I think people sometimes take that for granted. That being said, no one is perfect and everyone can make mistakes regardless of their position

And again, I go back to the fact that I'll always have a team of people alongside me and a ton of resources as well. We all go through things together, and I know that I personally have been informed of a lot of resources that I have in my hospital that I and my coworkers have access to at any point just to help support and maintain our mental health, which I think is amazing because I've always valued that, as do a lot of people
That sounds really inspiring. I've never really thought about the teamwork that takes place in the healthcare field, but now that you've explained how beneficial it is to you, it makes a lot of sense. Nurses are truly inspiring, and they definitely don't get the credit they deserve considering the work they do. And I'm glad you're learning as much as you are from them

And what I learned was that over there they really did have more of a hybrid system than I think a lot of people thought in terms of a mix between public and private health insurance, and that because of that, it wasn't drastically different than ours. And I think my ultimate takeaway from that trip, however, was that there really is no right answer to a perfect health care system right now

I do want to end on a positive note by saying that as Americans, a lot of us do deserve the credit for taking this seriously, wearing our masks and having consideration for those who are more at risk for the virus than others. I believe that it's going to take a combination of strong leadership by both authoritative figures in our country as well as individuals within their communities to beat this thing, and we will
I think that was incredibly well said. If I'm sharing my perspective, then I have to agree with you and say that we, as a nation, haven't handled this the way we should have. However, I'm also fairly optimistic, and I think that or at least I like to think that by next spring things will start to take a turn for the better in a more permanent way. Or at least that's my hope. We'll see what happens
