She was part of a number of researchers who published a paper about where we are with bias in other results of AI, and Google had hired her to really look at the ethics of AI in terms of bias, racial bias, cultural bias. And a paper she published really damned the process as to where it is right now. And Google had asked her to take off her name and all other Google names before it was propagated out into the world. And she wanted to know why
If a company is really about eliminating bias, you would think that this result would be ideal in an odd, counter intuitive way, because now you can use it as a tool to go back and readdress what's being created. We don't learn, and we don't improve by getting everything right. We got to stumble make those mistakes. But I also don't understand is if there really was this great amount of arrogance and the result was such a surprise. It's all about perceptions

Hi, Deborah, I have been following this news ever since it broke. And one interesting thing is that there are about 200 people within Google who are supporting her and who are asking a few questions. And I think I hope Google does something to address this. And yes, it's quite contradictory. The stance that Google has taken regarding her disengagement with Google, this whole study and the actual purpose of the study really beats me. What might have been the true purpose?

And I just thought of another level to this. Christina and Sudha, I just realized how meta this issue is because the bias of Google is creating their inability to to look at bias. It's not new, but I have to just laugh because I didn't actually see the sort of the vortex that we're in right now. It's

And they mentioned that she started talking to people at Gogl about this, and that's why she was being surveyed. They didn't want her telling people in the company about her findings, as long as they have the appearance of scrutinizing, it's okay that's corruption
Maybe I would make the worst business owner just a slight tangent here. You know, when we see individuals on social media, when they have a vulnerability, when they're willing to admit faults, you know, and show their humanity identity, we have more respect for them. I'm more drawn to them than I am the person who always looks perfect, who always says the quote, unquote right thing

Christina, I think you'd make a great business owner. Here's an example. I worked for an Italian restaurant for ten years. They had two sets of books. They had black books. They have white books. Many businesses do that. It's under the table cash. They had dealings with the Italian mafia, and they had dealings with the very highest up policemen in the city as well. They courted both sides of other fence, and they gave me a free dinner every night

Wow. I have just finally seen the news again and it looks like this story has absolutely exploded by the way. So lots to read. Lots to think about. This is a little bit of a straw that is breaking a back of some sort. I'm not going to talk about the camel that for camel back. Hans been broken so many times, but this is a good moment in history because I think Google is just being brought to the map. I and let's see what happens

And she said, and after that, all her accounts immediately stopped working. And it was very dehumanizing. I fully understand that aspect of it and that, I think was completely incorrect. I see the work of legal in this. This must have come from the very top in the legal Department because there must be something in that research paper that is potentially harmful for them in terms of lawsuits, which is why they want their name removed. And legal typically is used to negotiating contracts with other lawyers

Well, you're so right. This is such a fertile conversation. And thank you for delivering it to us. I don't know if I was living underneath a rock or what, but I missed it earlier, and so I went searching for it on Google and began thinking immediately that I wonder if Google is suppressing the results to diminish the story. They do wield so much power now. And I was reminded of a quote from a movie, The Dark Knight at the Batman film

Hans, I'm kind of blown away also about, you know, sometimes when we really get into it, we get inside the messy, which I really love. And I'm glad you're here. And Sudha, you mentioned this idea of the legal team's understanding repercussions of their bad behavior. And I think it's even deeper than that

Don't talk about the Mafia. Hey, Hans, welcome to Swell. Great to have your voice here. I'd like to Echo the words of Deborah very rich, fertile conversations all over other place. I'm lisping slightly because I've got this new dental plate in my mouth. My boss called it a doorbell denture because you have to slip it in before you open. I'm missing some teeth. Too much information. It's got nothing to do with the Mafia. Welcome to swell

I would say necessarily myopic conversation around race, color, gender, ethnicity, region, things of that nature. But it also brought me down another path when I began thinking about experiences in the boardroom or in a room of others who are sharing and talking. And you hear someone say one thing, and then someone says the same thing just a little while later, and everyone's like, Whoa, wow. That was really awesome. And that was amazing

So I highly doubt that they're going to do anything to rectify that aspect, but I definitely want to see how they're going to deal with it, because I don't think they would have anticipated how much traction the story is getting globally. And I think this is probably one of the most important conversations to have, apart from how irresponsible these large corporations have been, especially in the last couple of Dbpardes. So I look forward to it

What other examples can we talk about where we can see that the members of the organization change? So the organization change changes. And I think it would be great to look at those examples of case studies to give us some hope, because then we're just all wasting our time and time is precious and time is a commodity. And should we not just go and do something else? I'm instead of trying to raise consciousness and connect and make sense of this

And this is again, empirically speaking, I find that a lot of media outlets have increasing spaces for dialogue and discourses. So some of my friends who work in far right media outlets who have very different viewpoints from what's being projected on screen, they somehow find increasing spaces to communicate other actual point of view. And of course, that's probably because they're in the media and the media is more receptive to diversity of opinion. But I agree with you. I think it would be very interesting
