Why I think Dune is the greatest piece of Science Fiction ever, and what even is sci-if anyways?

article image placeholderDune - Frank Herbert
It's frequently not about the story or the writing, but about how the difference between our universe and the universe of the story can illuminate something interesting about humanity. A common trend we see in science fiction is something called the Novum, and the Nova is the one thing in their universe that is different about which their entire universe hinges. For example, in Star Wars, if you can accept that the force exists, everything else is close enough as to be effectively ignored

Dune is the greatest. Fight me.

Dune makes me feel smart

Those ideas that govern the setting unfold along with the moving of the plot and with the growth of the characters. And it makes for a really interesting development of these ideas that you were talking about

And from this simple point of deviation, Frank Herbert builds an entire world both at the individual human level that's affected by the existence of force field technology, but also extrapolates the kind of Galactic political principles that would flow from this technology existing. And I think that's the real power of Dune. I heard someone joke not too long ago that if George R. Or Martin wrote Dune, it would be 50,000 pages long. And that's a real compliment to Frank Herbert

But this book has definitely made me want to explore more Sci-fi for sure. I understand why it is a classic, and I'm so glad that I got to read it before I saw the film. It gave me an even deeper appreciation for the film. I really enjoyed the film adaptation, but I think having read the book allowed me to understand the nuances of the story even more, and I'm not sure if I would have liked the film quite as much without the backdrop of the Fuller story
