Why does musical plagiarism still happen in 2020?

article image placeholderPlini issues statement in response to pop star Doja Cat lifting his music for her MTV EMA performance
She performed her song Say So and I saw that she had posted it and there was an article that had popped up on my news feed that said something along the lines of Doja Cat is honoring heavy metal music with her MTV performance. So of course I go check out the song and wouldn't you know it? There's this part in about two minutes and 50 seconds in the song that I was listening to it and I thought, Gee, I've heard this before

Yes, not a good look.

She basically is talking bad on black folks on some of her old internet posts that got leaked, so she had to kind of battle all that sort stuff that she made when she was like a starving artist or whatever. And I think it was on Tumblr. It was an old Tumblr post. Somebody found it. The internet is so resourceful when it wants to be, but yeah, that's unfortunate

@Dewuan

Hey, Duan. Yeah. You bring up a really good point. The fact that there's rehearsals for this and there's other management team is there. I think you're right. I don't think that Dojicat was involved in this. I think that she was just told, you know, go do your thing and go sing the song. Here's going to be a little breakdown. It's not in the original version of the song, but it will be in this version

Plagiarism and intellectual honesty, remember where you learned/heard that

So I'm not an artist in the musical sense, but my art is writing and words. And when I intentionally did not read other people's stuff due to the risk of plagiarism, I have a friend of mine who's a University Professor, adjunct professor. And when these students submit their work electronically, he puts it through plagiarism checks amongst grammar and other things. But it's just really interesting

You know, it's interesting that you bring up academia and writing, because when I was going to school, I indeed had to use one of those plagiarism checkers where you would submit your paper online, and then it would actually give you a report back, letting you know how much of your paper is considered plagiarized. And there was a certain threshold that you couldn't pass, right? Because sometimes if you misquote something, they don't want to totally dock you

Education needs to teach intellectual honesty alongside course @CaliGooner

But as a student, I mean, the whole purpose of education is to teach you a body of work in an attempt to help you acquire skills and you can't use if you don't consume the work, you can't paraphrase it. So there's always a risk of plagiarism. And so that's why, like you mentioned, calligooner that this whole thing of a certain threshold you had to maintain

Do Raimi fasolatido. How can we use just those same basic notes and come up with the diversity of expressions, even the same instrument using the same instrument. We have such diversity of sound out of those. I'm not a mathematician. My older brother was, and I would be intrigued to know the mathematical quantity that is represented in the possibilities of all of those notes in the various forms that they can take and the output that would come from that

The interesting thing I find about this original story is that the artist who was so called stolen from I'm not sure what the case is, but that he didn't immediately run to saying he's going to sue them for Copyright infringement, but that he would like credit, and that's valid

It seems like they're working out whatever details they need to so that there's proper credit that's given if that's on YouTube, so be it. I mean, the damage is done, I guess already. But I wanted to update everybody here and link the article from Guitar World that touches on the apologies that went Winnie's way
