Cobra Kai Watch Party πŸ₯‹

article image placeholderOfficial Cobra Kai Trailer - The Karate Kid saga continues
Happy Friday, so it is very rainy here where I live. We are feeling the aftereffects of Hurricane Laura, so I will be cooped up most of the weekend along with reading. I plan on doing a lot of watching of Cobra Kai, which just dropped on Netflix. You can blame Average Joe for what is about to ensue, which is that I am going to do a review of every episode I watch and I'm going to try to do a review in a minute or less for each episode

Alright, Rachel, I'm back from dinner. It was a birthday celebration. I was doing a good clip of drinking and so if I'm, you know, not as articulate as usual, there was some whiskey involved. Anyway, look, 3 hours of ago you made this. Well, you have to be at least through episode one, right? So what do we have? I'm not seeing you checking in and I need you to check in right now
@Taylor
Taylor J
@TaylorΒ Β·Β 0:37
Average Joe. D*** you. It's the latter. I'm two episodes in no, two and a half episodes in and the nostalgia is there the drama or the tea, as my girlfriend would call it, is there and Johnny Lawrence is just the Chef's kiss of disaster pieces right now and I'm fully committed. So again, I blame you both
@AverageJoe
Average Joe
@AverageJoeΒ Β·Β 1:00
Taylor, I'm so thrilled to hear that you're sucked in. And I think it's episode six, which is a masterwork when you get to that, I think it's that at it involves Johnny and Daniel going to the bar. I don't want to spoil anything, but when you hit that moment, it all just falls in place. It all comes together. It's fantastic. And I'm glad you're digging it. I'm glad your girlfriend is digging it
@Taylor
Taylor J
@TaylorΒ Β·Β 1:22
I know every single street they reference every single time they drive by a store. I know where it is. Let's take that a step further. Daniel LaRusso's daughter is someone that I've met several times. She's a good friend of one of my best friends. And we were actually at a wedding together last year at the same table. So it's hard to picture her as Daniel son's daughter. But then let's take this a step further. I'm watching

So average Joe was right. I stayed up all night in a fever dream called Cobra Kai. I've watched both seasons, and I'm a new person know, just kidding. I really just wanted to build up the anticipation and see how invested you both would be in going on this journey with me. So here we are. I feel like I have your full attention now
@AverageJoe
Average Joe
@AverageJoeΒ Β·Β 0:34
You know, that post started off fantastically, and then you pulled an M. Night Shyamalan plot twist on me, you know, boo, boo, Rachel. You know? All right, well, now I'm looking forward to when you do start watching. And Taylor, man, that's something I never had to consider. I never had to consider actually knowing anybody in something. I'm watching. That's kind of weird, and it would definitely ruin it for me
@bowie
Bowie Rowan
@bowieΒ Β·Β 0:51

ep 1

Episode One top three moments starting with number three. Third favorite moment when Daniel says, I kicked him in the face. Second favorite moment when you see Johnny walking into the LaRusso car dealership with sunglasses and a hood up as though he will not be spotted. And all time. Best moment of Episode One is 100% when Johnny does a high kick for the first time and immediately wins in pain and buckles over. It was so good
@AverageJoe
Average Joe
@AverageJoeΒ Β·Β 1:41
You know, just like I said, I had to go back and start again today. So I'm only episode two because we had that this is going to sound ridiculous, but we had another birthday party tonight, so I was back, back out the door. But yeah, watching it again and seeing Johnny again, his drunken splendor. I'm going to have to go through the whole thing all over again
@bowie
Bowie Rowan
@bowieΒ Β·Β 2:17

ep 2

I also don't know how to make sense of the little smile that happens between them at the end of episode two, it made me a little uncomfortable, not necessarily in a bad way. Just like the tone of the show is so interesting because there are these moments where it feels really self aware and kind of ironic, which is part of the humor. And then there are other moments where it feels really serious, which is interesting
@bowie
Bowie Rowan
@bowieΒ Β·Β 0:18

ep 3

Okay. Episode three. Best thing. Definitely the skeleton costume throwback. That was sick. Worst thing. All these scenes from high school are pretty traumatic. So there's that
@AverageJoe
Average Joe
@AverageJoeΒ Β·Β 1:30
So it's just kind of funny. After episode three, things kind of starts to really pick up, and you'll see some of the funniest moments are Johnny with his class. Well, I don't want to spoil anything. We'll talk about it when you get there
@AverageJoe
Average Joe
@AverageJoeΒ Β·Β 0:44
Because I'm a friend, Rachel, allow me to treat you to the musical stylings of Zebra. Can you feel it? You got your feathered hair, your friends jacket? You're cruising down a strip with your friends the car smells like weed. You are fully prepared to rock. That was their Hi Hotel and Lies. Now you're in the mindset of one Mr. Johnny Lawrence
@bowie
Bowie Rowan
@bowieΒ Β·Β 1:03

EVER!?!?

I really can feel some Johnny Lawrence energy coming from that Zebra song. And it made me think last night I was having a conversation with friends about Neanderthals and how apparently it's come out that due to the facial structure and stuff of the Neanderthals faces, they actually have, or at least researchers are saying that their voices would have been super high pitched. And it makes me wonder if Zebra and other bands from that era are just really leaning into the more high pitched Neanderthal tones of a different time
@bowie
Bowie Rowan
@bowieΒ Β·Β 0:23

ep 4

All I have to say about Episode Four is that I really want some Boba tea now. And also I hate how I am so easily into a s***** dad tries to redeem himself. Storyline, so I'm officially hooked
@AverageJoe
Average Joe
@AverageJoeΒ Β·Β 3:25
I once actually heard a conversation about why the 80s were the way they were. The clothes were so loud. David Lee Roth once described it as everything smiled. And it's kind of true. And from a psychological point, the conversation I once heard was that in the 19s 70s, we came through Vietnam and Americans weren't feeling good about being American, right? Which that might be a little familiar right now
@bowie
Bowie Rowan
@bowieΒ Β·Β 1:56
All joking aside, I will say the one thing that you forgot to mention in relation to the 80s is that Reagan was President, and I pretty much blame Reagan for a lot of what ended up happening in the 90s. As far as, like why Nirvana had to exist. I'm using Nirvana as a standin for just that whole grunge kind of depressed, like everything's terrible sort of thing that you were mentioning
@bowie
Bowie Rowan
@bowieΒ Β·Β 1:25

ep 5

Episode five is by far my favorite episode in this season, so well, I should say so far, so I am so stoked about Aisha joining Cobra Kai and seeing her just straight up tackle Miguel was pretty incredible. Also, that lunchroom brawl was sick. I am so proud of Miguel, so I feel like it's pretty obvious what's going to happen. Here are my predictions for the plot, Miguel, and what's her name is. It Sam
@AverageJoe
Average Joe
@AverageJoeΒ Β·Β 2:24
Reagan and the moral majority. I think we're 100% the catalyst to this movement that we see now that cloaks itself in pseudopatriot and Christianity. However, I do agree with Reagan's children in that. I think if he were here now, he wouldn't be going along with this. He may be what would be called a never Trumper at this point, but who knows?
@bowie
Bowie Rowan
@bowieΒ Β·Β 1:09

ep 6

I have to admit, I got a little tearyeyed here in episode six. I really I'm surprised at how well they are handling these flashbacks, not only the ones that are cuts to the Kratic and movies, but also this recreated flashback to Johnny as a kid when he first discovers corporate eye. It was pretty good
@bowie
Bowie Rowan
@bowieΒ Β·Β 0:49

ep 7

Cobra Kai's gone to All Valley, baby. I have no idea what the h*** this will mean and how Daniel will be involved. So far, my predictions around Miguel and Sam have proven proven to be true. Though I feel like something pretty Harry is going to happen once Johnny realizes that his son has been bonding with Daniel, so we shall see. I can't believe I only have three episodes left. I'm tearing through season one

ep 8, 9, 10!!!

It made me laugh out loud a lot, and it's like just the right amount of cheesy without taking it too far. So the verdict is still out if you think you have taste or not average Joe, but for this one, I'd say you're pretty right. So I want to know your thoughts on season two. I thought you said that all in all, you didn't like season two as much. So I'm curious to hear what you think
@AverageJoe
Average Joe
@AverageJoeΒ Β·Β 2:21
So I'm in the minority here say episode six of season two is the best episode of the entire series. So I guess you'll see when you get there, but the cliffhanger at the end of season two, you'll be clamoring for season three after that, like me. And then we're all going to watch that together. I won't get to be ahead of anybody at that point
@bowie
Bowie Rowan
@bowieΒ Β·Β 2:17
I'm assuming it's going to be a little while before season three ends up coming out on Netflix since the first two seasons only just are there now. And I don't know, did they already finish shooting it, or is any of that delayed because of COVID it's going to be a weird time right now as far as release dates and everything. So just curious if you have other scoop on any of that. And thanks again for mentioning it
@AverageJoe
Average Joe
@AverageJoeΒ Β·Β 1:40
So here's the season three story. As I understand it, it's been in the can for quite a while. It's been shot, been done. Should have dropped on YouTube red, like in May. But basically YouTube decided they're out of the original series game. And so they went to the showrunners and said, hey, look, you can still drop it on YouTube, Red. But no matter how successful it is, there will not be a season four. We're done
@bowie
Bowie Rowan
@bowieΒ Β·Β 0:20
Oh, sick. That's amazing. I am hooked. So I was gonna be really bummed if it was a thing where it's like, you have to wait a whole other year for season three or something. So I'm very happy to hear that and excited for us all to talk about it, too
@Taylor
Taylor J
@TaylorΒ Β·Β 0:58
There will be real down Earth talks between some of the characters that are super relatable, and you feel like you've been in that position before, and then it will cut to like a totally ridiculous fight scene or like a party scene that's just like, way more absurd than you can imagine. And you're like, this doesn't happen, but I dig it. And I sort of love that compare contrast between other two

season two!! @AverageJoe @CaliGooner

Oh, average Joe, you have encouraged me to lose hours of my life. I crushed season two last night. I don't know know. It happened to me. I told you, I have no boundaries once I'm invested in a storyline, I loved season two. I actually think I loved it even more than season one. And I think that's partially because we already have a deeper understanding of the characters
@Taylor

@TaylorΒ Β·Β 0:41
Rachel well said. I thought season two was so tightly put together. Everything worked so well. I the ending. My. My jaw was on the floor. I audibly gasped. And I feel like we all kind of could have seen something like that coming. But it was just so jarring when it happened. I couldn't not. I was restless. I was watching a pretty late at night and I could not go to sleep
@AverageJoe

@AverageJoeΒ Β·Β 1:44
Do we have to do a whole another series here? Because the Boys, season two is about to begin this weekend. And if you haven't seen other first season of The Boys, what have you been doing watching Cobra Kai or something, but, yeah, I'm glad you to Doug it. And I'm glad to know that you're both now hardcore Zebra fans, because how can you not be? You do rock, bro. Right? Come on

I what I don't even know of the boys. What you're ruining with my life with all these recommendations, I'm going to have to watch that now too, and it looks pretty good. So maybe. Yeah, maybe that'll be my watch for the weekend. I guess you will know eventually or not if I watch it, especially if another season is about to start. Yeah, hardcore Zebra fan now. I've been roughing super hard all week. Just kidding

I know everybody's waiting for season three. We've been waiting for season three. It's not easy to see the ball kick down the field, but it's what has to happen. And we're just thankful to our fans for hanging with us and hope they invite their friends to watch the first two and get ready for the big ride. Because season three is incredible. It's really incredible

dark on NETFLIX ⚫️

No, thank you for reporting this breaking news, but also that's such a bummer. I was like, so excited to hopefully get through the Dark York Times as we head towards Winter with the Pandemic still going on with some more Cobra Kai, but it also gives you something to look forward to whenever it does come out in 2021. I just cannot believe we're even getting to a point where 2021 seems close in sight
@AverageJoe
Average Joe
@AverageJoeΒ Β·Β 2:09
In fact, they give the characters accents as if they were Swedish speaking in English. You speak American, real good, but it comes off way better. It feels better, and they actually put emphasis on the lines where emphasis belongs and stuff, whereas a lot of times in Dark, they just read it very robotically. I'm only in, like halfway through a second season in Dark because as usual, what happens with Bin shows something else comes along that I might be looking forward to
@bowie
Bowie Rowan
@bowieΒ Β·Β 1:42
So maybe I'll end up watching this one next and I'll let you know I'm about to finish season one of Dark and feel like it's just starting to get really interesting now that all the characters are established and stuff, it's a pretty complicated show. You can hear that. That's my dog

Jumped in without expectations, pleasantly surprised πŸ˜€

Or maybe because Netflix has this not so subtle way of telling me that I ought to watch the series by playing out the trailer constantly every time I'm on the app. So anyway, I got started on it and ended up watching the entire two seasons, and I admit that I quite enjoyed it

But still with that 80s sense morality to him, like when he was in there talking about the kids lip and he was just being in 1980s with it. But 1980s today is 100% politically incorrect, but it's a great show. I'm glad Joe recommended it

Waiting for season 3

Yeah, I love that show. I was ready when it first came on for it to be a tribute to other thing and kind of be fan fan service, but it's so much deeper than that, and I'm not going to say too much about it, but I'm waiting for season three to drop, which I assume will happen after Netflix has it for a little while anyway. Definitely worth a watch of Cobra Kai
@bowie
Bowie Rowan
@bowieΒ Β·Β 1:00

@Neopatriarch Agreed!

Hey, Robert. Yeah. I completely agree with you. I think that is what I found most surprising about seasons one and two as well is that it ends up being a lot deeper and more emotional than I was expecting it to be. There's. Still, you know, humor is really there throughout, but I think especially season two
@Neopatriarch

@NeopatriarchΒ Β·Β 1:44

About that scene when Johnny defeats the bullies.

I really love the way a scene will be a call back to a scene from one of the movies. But then there's something perversely different about it. Like, for instance, when the young man is coming out of the store and the bullies are picking on him and Johnny jumps in and kicks all other butts. But I forget his name now, I haven't seen it in a while

SEASON 3!

It has been three months, at least since the last comment on this thread. Not because we don't love Cobra Kai, but because Cobra Kai has not been on the air. Well, guess what, baby? It is back. Season three just premiered on the first of the year, and I just started it last night and wouldn't you know it? I'm already in four episodes

@Taylor Forgive me for I have binged πŸ™

Taylor, I'm so excited that you posted about this. I have been very busy because I watched all of season three of Cobra Kai this weekend. I couldn't help myself. I am just incapable of setting boundaries when it comes to shows that I really like. So since it was a holiday weekend, I told myself that binging could happen and it did
@Taylor
Taylor J
@TaylorΒ Β·Β 1:27

@bowie

There was also the exclusion of one of the main characters from the last two seasons, and I thought that the way that they sort of rushed that aside was fairly strange. Now one thing I love about this show is how over the top it is at times and sort of that cringy 80s way this season. They really went over the top with that
@AverageJoe
Average Joe
@AverageJoeΒ Β·Β 1:04
And I'm going to assume even though no official statement has been made, that the decision to exclude that character had more to do with the personal life of the actor than it did to just write the character out because that was the official statement being made that I was told that my character had no place in the story for season three, which clearly is not the case. So I think that's what was said when in reality it was more due to the personal life
@AverageJoe
Average Joe
@AverageJoeΒ Β·Β 4:35
Now, for me, the highlight of this entire season was the rekindling of Ali and Johnny's romance relationship. Whatever you want to call it. Now, what made it so great is, I think so many people from my demographic now. We grew up, we were teenagers, when these two were having their original relationship, and we also now are middle aged people the same way they are. So in a weird way, this journey of their lives is also other journey of our lives
@bowie
Bowie Rowan
@bowieΒ Β·Β 3:31

@AverageJoe Yes! What about season 4?

And I think those kind of conflicting things work for me so well in this show, where it's like, I am not taking it totally seriously. Yet I also feel so earnestly invested in what's going on with everyone, which is just an interesting experience, and I already cannot wait for the next season. I wish it was coming out right now, and you always seem to know what's going on with stuff like that. So do you have any info insights predictions or season four

It just means that Chris might have thought that it was because maybe it was really the child of Hillary Swank's dad. Who Hilary Swank would be that kid, right? Are we following along? Am I too confusing now there's a thing called check off gun in film. You probably know about it. Where if they show you something that's going to come into play later, right? It's going to have meaning. So the car is a check off gun

So basically the opposite of what Star Wars has been doing. They gave us what we wanted in so many incredible and unique ways. And what you said about chosen spot on. I was thrilled to see him brought back, and I was thrilled at the way that they used him. I was thrilled with the Miyagi Scroll and the honk moment. Everything was just beautifully done with him and the other characters that they brought back with Ally. It was really nice what I do want to say
