Books vs movies/tv shows

article image placeholder‎Living A Life Through Books: S2E89 - Books or Movie/TV on Apple Podcasts
Hello, everyone. Here is my latest podcast episode. I'm hoping to get some kind of a conversation going. It's about books, books, as in reading the books versus watching the movie or the TV show. I don't think I was completely committal in my episode, but I was just kind of breaking it up like what I thought had what I thought movies had and gave some examples. I hope you guys get a chance to listen and start this conversation. I cannot wait

Setting, Normal People, and Pride & Prejudice

And the way that you talk about the importance of that in an adaptation being successful, or maybe a reason why we end up liking a book more when an adaptation doesn't do enough work for us to feel intimately connected to a character. I thought that was so interesting and you did such a good job in the episode of that

Jesus' Son, The Hunger Games, and seeing a movie before reading the book

But it had been years since I watched the movie and I remembered that I loved the movie, but it had been so long I felt like I couldn't really compare it to the book to decide, okay, which one do you think is better? Do I like one more than the other? Is it a successful adaptation?

What would have happened if I'd have read the book first without that visual at all, what would my visual have been and then seen the movie or an adaptation and then see it and go, oh, wow. I will tell you it's very interesting because have you read the Help and or seen the adaptation? Now, that is a very good book and adaptation

Handmaid's Tale excitement 🤓

As far as adaptations, I feel very excited about the possibility of our next Buddy read with a handmaid tale because I have seen all of the Hulu adaptation, and I'm really curious if the book lives up to how intensive and experience watching the show has been, and I definitely would love to talk about that either during our buddy read or as a separate conversation

Hey, Rachel, I just wanted to respond to your comment. I watched the first season of The Handmaid's Tale. I didn't stop watching it because I didn't enjoy it. I just other things came up in my life, and I just kind of it fizzled out at the time. But I can tell you I took a class my senior year of undergrad in the religious studies Department

And when we have that talk, maybe too, you'll end up watching more of the show. It's definitely a hard one to just be like, oh, I'm going to sit down and watch this super casual because it is so intense but definitely worth it. All of the seasons have just been exceptional, in my view. So excited. Just thought about this more. And thank you so much for sharing

Adaptation is ok to discuss also... Some people may not have watched it!

My only hesitation is I don't want someone to get confused when you mention something to be like that wasn't in the book. What are you talking about? Wow, that's a great influence. And it's like, no, that wasn't an inference that was from the adaptation. So just as long as we're clear that it's an adaptation that you're discussing when you're reading the book, say, Well, I read up to this chapter, and this happens
