‘80s Rewind - Mall City

article image placeholderMall City Documentary 1983 NYU Film of Roosevelt Field Mall Culture + The Song "Mall City"
Guy hits the scene. Punk rock jacket, punk rock hairstyle. He's disgusted by all the kids who waste their time at the mall playing video games. What are they getting out of that? It just goes to show you above it all. Guy has always existed throughout time. It's not just today. It's been forever. And I'm sure before him, if we had documentation of it, there was above it all. Guy in the 1950s, in the 1940s and on and on

The cultural revolution of the 80’s in india

And even in arranged marriages, the format changed with our generation, wherein it was not the parents making the decision, but rather children were allowed to meet, allowed to have two or three meetings, go on a so called date and then decide whether they wanted to commit to one another or not. So the whole modernization of Indian culture came about with our generation and much of it happened in the 80s

Like, were you listening to that kind of stuff and getting a vision of what was going on here through music because I know you're saying the television just kind of kicked in and you eventually got more than one channel. So I would assume that that wasn't a great outlet for what was going on elsewhere. Or maybe it was I kind of would like to know how that all played out

So a lot of the cultural revolution happened by exposure to books and by exposure to music. But I also think it was the education that was given to women. So it's very interesting. In the 70s, a law was passed wherein the central government, the federal government in India, requested States to increase literacy of their population and to reduce the population expansion. And they offered monetary incentives to States to do that. And the Southern States actually took it up in a very disciplined fashion

I must also caveat that I speak from the point of view of a reasonably, you know, midsized town cities, I'm sure were ahead of towns by at least a few years. So if somebody was in a city, they probably experienced arts culture shift a few years before the smaller town girls did. But I would say that all of this happened in the span of that one generation. And much of this happened in the Eighties

So I wonder if you see any connection between the situation and the leadership role that Bangalore is giving in software development and other computer services, and that early adoption of the new direction

Lounging, I know that's tough to do with COVID, but even precovid, I don't think you had people marking that as a destination, and now it's a place to go get what you need and get out. Another thing I've noticed so far, the smoking, the old woman smoking in the middle of all the kids smoking. It's just definitely a different time, and it's just amazing how open smoking was

I guess it was kind of a tumultuous period, right. That was the troubled times, if I recall correctly now to show I watch on Netflix Dairy Girls makes it seem a little more light hearted. And maybe that's how it was. But there did seem to be a lot of problems going on. But was that certain regions in Northern Ireland?

Hey, Paul, that's an excellent observation. I hadn't really thought about that. So the it hub of India is in Bangalore, which is in the south, and the state of the reason it is in Bangalore is because the pioneering firm's emphasis and we're set up headquarters in Bangalore in the 80s. And I suspect now that I think about it that the educated workforce and the availability of a highly educated workforce around where they were located was a great part of their success
